Chili flakes are coarsely ground from whole red chili peppers and have a mild to medium heat. Their culinary uses are both popular and diverse and they can be added to almost any meal in need of some heat. Chili flakes can also be infused into herbal oils for topical use. These chili flakes are typically between 20,000 – 50,000 HU and considered highly pungent.
The burning sensation of hot peppers is a reaction of the central nervous system to capsaicin; unlike horseradish, wasabi, garlic, ginger, and mustard, capsaicin only causes the sensation of damage, not real damage to tissues.
